For the last 35 years the one question that keeps coming up
is. . .
"What's up with this 'Cooo. . .kamonga' thing?"
Well, it all started when my dad, Ted Howard, began this company
in 1971. He wanted to have a company name that people would remember.
At that time we lived 40 miles east of Los Angeles in the city
of Upland. That was right next door to the town of, yep, you
guessed it, CUCAMONGA! (F.Y.I. This is the correct spelling,
although it has been incorporated with the two other neighboring
towns of Alta Loma and Etiwanda, and is now known as Rancho Cucamonga.)
As some of you will remember, Jack Benny had a radio show
in the 40s and 50s. There was a part of the show where Mel Blanc
played the part of a conductor calling out, "All aboard
for Anaheim, Azuza and Cooo. . .kamonga!" (The "ooo..."
was exaggerated.)
My dad, being the idea man that he was, decided to put the
town that Jack Benny made famous to use. He went to the Cucamonga
post office and obtained a P.O. box. Most folks thought it was
an imaginary place, so when they saw a post mark and address
in Cucamonga it was something to remember. It has worked so well
that at veterinary conferences around the U.S. when folks see
us and they can't remember our name they simply say, "Hey,
Cucamonga!"
To this day, I believe that "Cooo. . .kamonga" has
been partly responsible for the name recognition of our company.
